SharkJaw hydraulic power units are purpose-designed to power shark jaw and towing pin systems in demanding marine environments. Every HPU is matched at the factory to the specific pressure and flow requirements of the connected equipment, ensuring reliable and responsive actuation without oversizing the power plant or under-sizing the reservoir.

Each HPU is built around a marine-rated electric motor, a high-efficiency axial piston pump, a stainless-steel reservoir with full-volume sight glass and low-level alarm, a dual-element return filter with bypass indicator, and a pressure-compensated relief valve set to the working pressure of the connected equipment. The manifold block is machined from solid steel and tested at 1.5× working pressure before assembly. Control wiring is terminated in a sealed junction box rated IP56 as standard, with IP66 available for open-deck installations.

The HPU-15 and HPU-22 models operate at 21 MPa and are matched to the SJ-100 through SJ-300 shark jaw range and TP-100 through TP-300 towing pin range. The HPU-30 and HPU-45 models operate at 25 MPa and are required for the SJ-400 through SJ-700 and TP-400 through TP-500 equipment. When used as the shared power source for an integrated combo system, the HPU model is selected based on the larger of the two connected equipment specifications, with dual-circuit priority valving included as standard.

Hydraulic Power Units (HPU) — FAQ

How is the correct HPU model selected for my shark jaw or towing pin?

HPU selection is driven by three parameters: the required working pressure of the connected equipment, the peak hydraulic flow demand during actuation, and whether the HPU will serve a single unit or a shared combo system. All SharkJaw shark jaw and towing pin models have defined pressure and flow requirements listed in their technical datasheets. We match the HPU to those requirements plus a 15–20% flow reserve, and we size the reservoir to ensure adequate thermal capacity for continuous duty cycles in high-ambient-temperature environments. If you are ordering the HPU alongside the main equipment, we handle the matching automatically. If you are retrofitting an HPU to existing equipment, send us the equipment model numbers and we will confirm the correct HPU specification.

What routine maintenance does the HPU require at sea?

Routine HPU maintenance consists of hydraulic fluid sampling and top-up (monthly), filter element inspection and replacement (per fluid analysis or at 2,000-hour intervals), and visual inspection of hose connections and accumulator pre-charge pressure (quarterly). All service points are accessible from one side of the unit without moving adjacent equipment. We supply a maintenance schedule card laminated for deck use as part of the delivery documentation. For vessels on extended offshore deployments, we recommend carrying one set of filter elements and one set of seal kits as onboard spares — both are available through our spare parts programme.
